New York’s investments in energy and a green economy attract Swedish companies
Buildings in New York produce most of the city’s carbon dioxide emissions. Climate laws like Local Law 97 aim to change that. The city is investing heavily in energy technology and is becoming a cleantech hub. This creates strong business opportunities for Swedish companies in the Skyline programme.
The Swedish Energy Agency’s Skyline accelerator programme is designed to promote the export and establishment of innovative Swedish energy solutions that can decarbonise and improve the energy efficiency of New York’s buildings.
The city’s property owners need to quickly adapt their portfolios to the strict legal requirements, and now the Skyline programme is growing with nine new companies offering products and solutions that can meet these needs.
Companies are offered a tailor-made acceleration programme where they build market insights and entry strategies and are introduced to the Swedish Energy Agency and Skylines’ partner network in New York, consisting of property companies, investors, project developers, technology consultants and managers.
– We are repeatedly impressed by the calibre and ambition of Swedish climate tech companies, which are breaking new ground in innovative energy solutions for the future. Their mission and technological solutions are a natural fit with New York, one of the largest and fastest-growing climate tech ecosystems in the world, says Anne-Sophie Mahle, Director of International Partnerships at the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC).
With over 1,200 venture capital firms, 25,000 technology-driven start-ups, more than 100 incubators and initiatives such as BATWorks and the International Landing Pad Network, New York offers a dynamic platform for Swedish companies to establish themselves.
– At NYCEDC, we are proud to help Skyline companies get off to a flying start on their upcoming visit to New York, concludes Anne-Sophie Mahle.
Climate Week NYC – New York’s global climate week
The programme also includes two delegation trips to New York, where companies will have the opportunity to present their offers and establish contacts with authorities, industry players and the local innovation ecosystem. The new Skyline companies will make their first trip in September, in conjunction with New York’s major Climate Week NYC.
– Climate Week is the most intense week of the year in New York, bringing together global leaders from politics, business, technology and civil society for a week of discussions on how we can accelerate the climate and energy transition. It is an important arena for influence, networking and knowledge exchange, says Sofie Fjellgren, Business Developer for International Markets at the Swedish Energy Agency.
The Swedish Energy Agency will organise activities to showcase Swedish innovation and best practice in energy and climate solutions for the built environment and how these innovations meet needs, both in New York and globally.
Partnerships open doors for establishment
To create the best conditions and a platform for companies to establish themselves, the Swedish Energy Agency has entered into partnerships with the long-established Swedish – American Chamber of Commerce in New York (SACCNY) and the New York-based energy consulting company Build Edison.
The Swedish Energy Agency also collaborates with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), which is the city’s business development agency and its largest property owner, with 60 million square metres under management.
NYCEDC runs major urban regeneration projects and incubators in Brooklyn and elsewhere, setting the direction for the new green economy that is now emerging in New York.
– Together with our partners, we put Skyline companies in direct contact with the key players who are shaping the future of buildings and the energy landscape in New York. Despite changes in federal policy, New York’s goal of reducing emissions from buildings and the energy sector remains firm, and there is great demand for innovative technological solutions, says Sofie Fjellgren, Business Developer for International Markets at the Swedish Energy Agency.
Companies participating in Skyline 2025
A total of nine companies have been accepted into the new Skyline programme. Participation in the programme is free of charge for the companies. All that is required of them is commitment and time to work on their launch on the American market.
